Eco-Friendly Holiday Tips for Kids: How to Celebrate Sustainably with Tiny Advocates

At Tiny Advocates, we believe that every little choice can make a big impact, especially when it comes to the holidays. This season, we would like to share with families how to create a holiday celebration that’s kind to the Earth, while teaching kids to value mindful choices. We gathered a few simple, kid-friendly ways to avoid overconsumption and practice eco-conscious gifting and decorating ideas.

    Wrap with Reusables

    • Use What’s at Home: Materials like old magazines, kid's drawings, last year wrapping can be easily turned into wrapping paper that kids can help decorate and color to add fun creative touch.
    • Reusable Wraps: For a fun family project, make reusable fabric gift bags from old clothes or fabric scraps. Kids can get involved in choosing and decorating the fabric. These bags can be reused year after year and teach kids about minimizing waste.

    Decorate with Nature

    • Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt: Take the kids on a nature walk to collect pine cones, twigs, and leaves and create eco-friendly holiday decorations with them. Dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, and garlands made from natural materials look so beautiful. Bonus, they compost easily afterward.

    Set Up a Holiday Recycling

    • Designate a spot for recycling materials like boxes, cards, and paper. After kids open gifts, show them how to separate recyclables.

Practice “One In, One Out” with Gifts

    • Introduce Responsible Giving: For every new toy or item received, encourage your kids to donate an item they no longer use. Kids can choose toys or clothes and pass them on to other families or children in need. This teaches gratitude and sharing. For a little extra touch, they can write a little note as to why and whom this is for.

    Plan for Sustainable, No-Waste Meals

    • Creative Leftovers: Challenge your kids to come up with creative ways to use leftovers (like turning veggies into soup or bread into stuffing) and make a game out of reducing food waste.

Share Stories about the Impact of Gifts

    • Teach the Value of Resources: When shopping, look for gifts and clothing that have stories behind them—like clothing made from organic cotton. Kids can learn about how items are made and why certain materials, like organic cotton or sustainably sourced toys, are more Earth-friendly.

We hope these ideas will inspire you to incorporate some of these practices into your holiday season.
